RESULTS and UPCOMINGS

“I would like to give a big thank you to each and everyone who came to the 1st Annual Helotes Marketplace Chili Cook-off braving the weather. We started the weekend off with a cook’s party at Floore Country Store on Friday night with handmade tamales, smoked sausages, chips and queso with your favorite cold beverage. Saturday, the streets of Old Town Helotes were lined with chili cooks, vendors, blood mobile, fire truck, SPCA and a band to entertain us all day. With people’s choice chili and 1,000 hungry local folks wanting to taste some good chili we were able to raise over $2,000 for our charity. Mayor Schoolcraft was very impressed with our current International Chili Champion’s trophy he is going to add Susan Dean’s photo to the Helotes website. He was also impressed that we also had a past champion (Margaret Nadeau) competing on Saturday. Everyone was cooking their best chili in hopes of winning a tall windmill trophy. (The logo for Helotes is a windmill) I would like to thank Debbie LaLanne for all of her hard work with judging; her assistant Mary Ellen Gillen; table monitors Steve Nadeau and Alan Dean; with Susan Dean monitoring finals table. Thanks to Bob Steinle as our referee and Clyde Rogers and crew for tallying. A huge thank you for everyone that brought “throw down” chili….over 275 tasting kits were sold. I think next year will be bigger and better. The town folks are already making a list on how to improve for next year.
