COOKOFF STORIES
The effects of El Nino are being felt in central Texas and that made for an interesting weekend. Heavy rain of 5-6 inches each day was forecast by Austin TV stations. I could believe it as we headed toward Helotes on Saturday, going down US 281. Visibility was about 30 feet and the road was flooded in several spots. However, the sun was shining (not really) on the Market Days chili cookoff. As we got to Helotes, there was a break in the weather. Skies threatened all day but conditions were mostly dry until judging was underway.
The weather was good enough that several hundred brave members of the public came out to sample chili and share the fun. The organizers sold many tasting kits, raising funds for the charity. I can’t wait to see next year, with better weather conditions. I’m sure the public turnout will be huge.
Lots of fun at this cookoff. Thanks to Bruce and Sharon Pinnell for all their hard work putting it together.
Sunday, it was off to Austin for the First Points For Sight Cookoff. We left in threatening conditions but, through the windshield, we spotted a bright spot to the southeast. Sure enough, no rain as we pulled into Giddy Ups. However, most of the motorhomes had acquired waterfront lots, thanks to some overnight storms.
We backed out of the water-soaked area and set up in the parking lot. It was wet but firm. We watched clouds all around but it stayed dry for the cookoff. The sun even peeked through now and then.
It seemed just like another nice Giddy Ups cookoff until after judging. John and Sue Caffey had planned one of our favorite games – watch the motorhomes try to get out of the mud.
Morris Tenery was the first to make an escape attempt. He managed to move forward about twelve inches while also digging himself down into the mud. The assembled cooks produced boards to place under the tires and a crew to push. That didn’t work too well. The motorhome moved but it only moved deeper into the mud. Keith Barkley, coached by Jean’s enthusiastic sentiments, produced a chain and a four-wheel vehicle to aid the effort. After a few starts, Morris was able to drive to higher ground.
Barkley’s motorhome was next. We employed the assist vehicle from the start but seemed to be stymied. We were making very little progress when someone said, ‘Don’t you all have roadside service?” They answered “yes” and the follow-up question was “Why don’t you just call them?” Joe answered, “Because we’re men.” We continued the effort to the chants of “Go men! Go men!”
Keith eventually got out and we all went inside for announcements.

Thanks to John and Sue, Nancy from Giddy Ups, and the whole crew from the SOT Pod for a fun day.
