RESULTS and UPCOMINGS
We’re just back from spending a week away from home. The fact that we were less than two miles from home shouldn’t count. Ha! Mentally, we’ve been far from our normal routine for weeks and now it’s time to unpack, organize, and see if we can find anything we’re looking for. I do want to be prompt reporting so here’s the scoop on Men’s State. We’ll catch up on the rest of the chili news tomorrow.
We’ll put the quote up front today, “Hire good people and stay out of their way.” I was so fortunate to have a front row seat to watch all of committee members and volunteers just take excellent care of the cookoff and keep everything from meals, to setting up tables and chairs, to registration, to managing judges, to placing the vendors, to announcing, to entertainment, etc., running smoothly. The list of tasks goes on and on and there were always plenty of workers addressing the needs.
I thank all of them from the bottom of my heart. The words feel inadequate but all those who helped can also take satisfaction with a great event, huge public attendance, and what will be significant charitable contributions to emergency services and non-profits all around town.
What a fantastic weekend! The combined efforts of the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce, the JC Visitors Center, our fine sponsors, cookoff organizing committee, competitors, and judges came together to put on a great show. The Fairgrounds were packed for the Texas Men’s State Chili and Barbecue Championships on Saturday and the follow-up Pod On The Pedernales Cookoff on Sunday. Cooks came from all over Texas, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Illinois, Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Nevada.
Some of the audience came from even more remote locations like Massachusetts, Oregon, California, and Washington State. Spectators enjoyed food, showmanship, craft and other merchandise vendors, and the music of Dean Strickland.
We sincerely hope everyone enjoyed their visit to Johnson City. We made a number of changes and additions to the cookoff in an effort to provide a memorable experience. We’ll continue to work to make the experience better and better.
For those who attended, thank you. For those who didn’t, plan to join our party next year
