NEWS

“The 1981 Terlingua Champ - Bill Douglas - Ice T - died this past week in a bus accident - he was driving for Milie Cyrus's production crew when he lost control and the bus went on it's side. They think it was a heart attack. If you know anymore please pass on.” Sherrie Davis

“Roylene Johnson has been in the hospital here in KC. She had surgery Tues. of this week on her wrist, it was crushed. This was the result of a fall from the fifth wheel in Terlingua. She has screws & a plate to hold it together. Yesterday they moved her to a rehab center because she is so wobbly on her feet. Don't know how long she will be there. She has her cell phone, if you want to call her.” Ted Hoover

COOKOFF STORIES

We had a very interesting weekend. It began with my first trip to Florence, Texas to referee a new cookoff at the Rattlesnake Inn. The Rattlesnake Inn is the oldest honky-tonk in Williamson County and has been in operation since prohibition.

This first-time event has great potential. There was an enthusiastic promoter, eager local cooks, bar patrons who turned out to watch and to judge, and a great, friendly spirit. What was missing was a promoter who had read the cookoff packet – or anyone who could even locate the packet. Fortunately, the Deans, Caffeys, and Dosses were prepared and the cookoff ran smoothly. If we can find a date without so much competition from established cookoffs, this cookoff should become a favorite for central Texas cooks.

On Sunday, we went to the Marble Falls bowling alley cookoff and raised the question, ‘how many chili cooks does it take to get into a locked truck?’ Reprising an earlier performance, Susan had locked the keys inside our pickup. The effort drew a large crowd throughout most of the cookoff and I regret not signing up for showmanship. This would have been a winner. Lynn Hejtmancik became our hero and saved the day with his slim jim.
