ILLINOIS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP "BATAVIA IL—The 18th Illinois State Championship Chili Cookoff was held Saturday, July 31st. The site, as it has been for the past 13 years was Batavia's downtown Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a great venue for the cookoff, and the Batavia Teen Center (our charity) provides much needed help. The Teen Center supervisors like the relationship because it allows the kids to interact with adults other than their parents. We like the help.
Twenty-eight cooks came out this year including many of our past champions. But, we have a new champion, Bill Thomas of Naperville is the 2010 Illinois State Champion. Bill is having a good year; he also won the Illinois Men's State Championship in May. Bill's wife, Candice placed third. Completing the Thomas sandwich, the "meat in the middle," was Jim Weller. It was a great day, a little rain early did no harm, and it was one of our cooler weekends this summer. The winners:

The following day, Aug 1st, was the 19th Windmill City Chili Cookoff. Around the turn of the century (the 20th century), Batavia was home to six windmill manufacturers. Virtually all windmills in the western US, at the time, were made in Batavia, thus the name. The Windmill City Chili Cookoff was first held just across the street from our present site, and was the first CASI cookoff in Illinois. Iowa's revenge for getting shutout on Saturday:

"I would like to thank all that came out to support the ACES POD cook off this past week end. It was hot but it appeared all survived and many needed points were awarded. All seemed to enjoy themselves especially the group that were swimming in Mel’s pool and Kim’s pool. I didn’t find time to take a dip but it looked refreshing. Aces Pod wants to thank Diana McMillan for joining us in a Memorial to JJ McMillan. You could have heard a pin drop as I talked about JJ and his gift to the Chili world. It was a touching and wonderful moment reflecting back on the past with JJ. JJ was ACES only announcer for ten years. Also thanks to Diana and Mike McGlophlin for teaming up to do announcements, they were funny giving out awards. My thanks to all ACES members and others that helped both with the Friday night cooks party and the cook off both days. As a number of cooks said after receiving their awards “JJ this one was for you”.
