RESULTS and UPCOMINGS

“On To Terlingua

MAPLE PARK IL—The 2010 Illinois chili season ended last Saturday (Oct 23) with a new cookoff. The Daniel P Figgins Memorial Cookoff was held at Kuipers Family Farm in (very) rural Maple Park IL. Kuipers provided a large tent for us to cook in which was a welcome relief from the rain and high winds.

Daniel Figgins was a St. Charles IL police sergeant who suffered a heart attack while chasing some bad guys in 2005. Sgt Figgins was 53 years old and in good shape, but his heart problem was unknown. The DPF Memorial Foundation provides heart scanning through Heartcheck America for area police officers. To date they have been able to check about 350 officers and have found heart problems in about half of them. It is reasonable to assume this information has saved numerous lives. Even though the weather kept the crowd down, we were able to generate $1700 which enable several more officers to be scanned. This was a good way to end the year. The winners:
