COOKOFF STORIES

The Good, the Strange, and the Ugly.

The Good. We went to the SAP-CASI fall cookoff at the Pioneer RV Park in Bandera, the Cowboy Capitol of the World, over the weekend. Great fun as always. Many thanks to Bob, Happy, Kim, Cheryl and all of their pod members and helpers who worked hard to make it a great weekend for everyone. Kenny and Clyde cooked stew on Friday evening and everyone was well-fed.

We had beautiful weather on Saturday and many cooks enjoyed the opportunity to do a little shopping town, purchasing clothing for the 60’s party in Terlingua and getting their hats steamed and shaped.

The Strange. Bruce, Sharon, Susan, and I were sitting in OST eating breakfast commenting on how early the salad bar was set up for the day. Then we noticed and laughed at some bikers who had brought in their little dog who was wearing a helmet. We thought it was unusual that they were allowing the dog in the restaurant. The person holding the dog turned to look for available tables. The dog was furiously wagging its tail – right over the salad bar contents and in the salad dressing.

The Ugly. After announcements yesterday, we started the long drive home, tired from a weekend of a little too much fun. The weather had turned ugly. It was overcast, foggy, and raining. The weather grew worse as we drove.

We had maneuvered through the roller coaster portion of 46 on the way to Boerne and we were looking forward to getting to 281 where it would be a straight shot home. Just before Bulverde, the police were had the road closed and were sending everyone south, the opposite direction from where we eventually had to go. There were no other police or signs and, by the time we found an opportunity to turn back, we’d gone many miles in the wrong direction and added about 45 minutes to our trip.

Fatigued, we only brought the essentials into the house last night.. In a few minutes, I’ll be headed out to the motorhome to bring in yesterday’s dirty dishes. Yuck.
