NEWS

“A tremendous supporter of CASI and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Georgia Horner started chemo treatments on Monday for pancreatic cancer. Georgia has worked hard over the past 9 years as the chairman for the Converse American Legion Chili Cookoff - and her respect for all the cooks was why she joined CASI several years ago. I personally encourage the many of you that have come to the Converse Legion Cookoff in the past as well as all CASI members to send her a card at: 252 Heritage View, Adkins, TX 78101 or email to:
jackhomeplace@earthlink.net. There is no doubt in my mind hearing from many of you (even if she does not know you) will be most inspirational at this critical time.” (Ken Rodd)

RESULTS and UPCOMINGS

“December 7, 2008 – Warm sun, beach sand, and the smell of suntan lotion WAS NOT the setting for the 10th Annual Hots for Tots Cook-Off in Ocean City, MD.

The 17 CASI cooks who showed up for the event diligently set up their cooking areas and tents (except for one megastar, a maverick in his own right), only to pull the tents back down due to the extremely windy and cold conditions.

More than one EZ Up canopy frame was twisted and destroyed by the gusts of bone chilling winds that ushered in a new cold front and snow for the area.

Tables were up turned, stoves and pots lay strewn on the wet grass and the cooks in general looked like they had just about had it by the time the cooks meeting took place at 10:30 a,m.

As it happens so often in the East, the cooks made a bad situation better, and got to know their neighbors by huddling up together in clusters of tables or cooking on their neighbor’s tail gates.

Despite Mother Nature’s best efforts to spoil the day, a good time was had by all, and no doubt a great many chili stories will come from this day.

Of all the cooks there that day, the one cook who had the most trouble due to the weather conditions also turned out to be the winner overall, proving that adversity can truly inspire one to greatness.
